OUR HISTORY

Our Story: From the Ground Up

At Bluebells Groundworks, we bring a lifetime of experience, hard work, and passion to every project we take on. Here’s how our journey began.
 
It all started when I landed my first job in horticulture at just 16 years old. I attended East Kent College in Ashford, studying Agricultural Mechanics—a hands-on course that introduced me to the ins and outs of maintaining and repairing ground care equipment. Over the next 13 years, I honed my skills in this sector. Looking back, I sometimes feel I stayed too long in that role, but it gave me an incredible foundation and a strong work ethic to build on.
 
Eager for a new challenge, I took up an opportunity to work for British Gypsum Mines in Brightling, East Sussex. This was a real turning point. Spending eight years working full-time underground, I climbed the ranks to become the Section Leader of the Mechanical Department. It was tough, rewarding work, but I had promised myself never to stay in one place too long once I had mastered the trade.
 
So, when I was approached by a spray concrete tunnel contracting company to lead their mechanical engineering department, I jumped at the chance. The role allowed me to work on some of the UK’s most high-profile infrastructure projects, including Crossrail, the Thames Tideway, and HS2. I loved the variety and challenge of the job, from working on-site in London to prototyping and building specialised equipment for unique tunneling tasks.
 
By March 2020, I was working long hours on a tunneling contract in London—12-hour shifts and 80-hour weeks, traveling back and forth daily. Then the pandemic hit. The site shut down, and I found myself with six precious weeks at home with my family, living in the middle of woodland by a fishing lake. Like so many others, those quiet weeks gave me time to reflect and reevaluate.
I realized it was time for a major life change. I wanted to use my skills and experience to create something of my own—something closer to home, with my family at the heart of it. And so, in August 2020, Bluebells Groundworks was born.
 
Since then, we’ve never looked back. With my background in mechanical engineering, project management, and a deep understanding of running complex jobs, I knew we could build a company that delivered excellence. Today, Bluebells Groundworks offers a full range of groundworks, hard landscaping, and project management services for both private and commercial clients across Kent and Sussex.
